I love fashion rings! But their price tag can be quite scary…Luckily, my crafting skill is here to help. In this tutorial, I will show you how to make wire wrapped rings for three different shape gemstones. You can create lots of beautiful rings using only a fraction of the market price.

1. Wire Wrapped Ring with Round Shape Gemstone 

Material Needed:  

• 22/24-Gauge Half Hard Wire
• 30-Gauge Soft Wire
• Round Shape Bead of your choice (I used a 6mm Amethyst bead)

Tools Needed:

• Wire Cutter
• Chain Nose Plier
• Ring Mandrel
• Looping Plier

Step 1. Form the base for the gemstone

Take a piece of 22-gauge wire, wrap the middle around the looping plier as shown in picture 2. The wire loop created will serve as the base for the round bead to sit on. Then bend the two ends outward using a chain nose plier.

Step 2. Wrap the ring

Wrap the entire piece around the ring mandrel. As a result, we’ll have a basic ring shape as in picture 5. For the extra wire at the front, bend one end upward and the other downward, as shown in picture 6.

Step 3. Weave the ring

To secure the ring, weave a piece of 28/30 gauge wire into the main wire. The weaving pattern I used is 5 wraps around the two layers and 5 wraps around a single layer (picture 8). This approach was also used for the next two projects. 

Step 4. Add the bead

After weaving, we can add the round gemstone to the base. Slide a piece of thin wire through the bead and wrap it around the base as shown in picture 9.

At this point, we still have two loose ends at the front. We can wrap both half way around the bead and secure at the opposite ends one or two times.

Now our simple round bead wire wrapped ring has completed!

2. Wire Wrapped Ring with Teardrop Shape Gemstone 

Material Needed: 

• 22/24 Gauge Half Hard Wire (25 – 30cm)
• 28 Gauge Soft Wire
• Teardrop Shape Gemstone of your choice (I used a 10mm Blue Crystal)

Tools Needed:

• Wire Cutter
• Chain Nose Plier
• Ring Mandrel 

Step 1. Make the base for the teardrop gemstone

First thing first, let’s create a sharp corner with wire to accommodate the teardrop shape. Fold a piece of 22 gauge wire in the middle using a chain nose plier. Then separate two legs apart to reveal the sharp corner.

Step 2. Wrap the ring

Wrap the entire piece around a ring mandrel. As a result, you’ll get a rough ring shape with 3 layers of wire at back and a triangle at front (picture 4).

Weave the ring as the previous project. Then using the two ends of the 22 gauge wire, secure the ring at where the weaving pattern stopped (picture 6). 

Step 3. Add the teardrop gemstone

Secure the teardrop gemstone in the center of the triangle with 28 gauge wire as shown in picture 7. Then continue wrapping the wire along the sides of the triangle for about 10 times (picture 8).

To completely secure the top-drilled teardrop bead in place, we can form a cross in the front of the bead using the remaining 28 gauge wire. Then secure the wire at the top of the triangle, as shown in picture 9.

Now our delicate teardrop gemstone ring has been completed!

3. Wire Wrapped Ring with Marquise Shape Gemstone 

Material Needed:

• 22/24 Gauge Half Hard Wire (25-30cm)
• 28 Gauge Soft Wire
• Marquise Shape Gemstone of your choice (I used a 13mm Citrine Gemstone)

Tools Needed:

• Wire Cutter
• Chain Nose Plier
• Ring Mandrel

Step 1. Measure the gemstone

Unlike the previous two projects which start with making the base, this project leaves the base to the end. However, we’ll need to measure the width of the marquise gemstone in advance to make sure there’s enough room left on the ring. The bead I am using is about 8mm in width, as a result, the length it needs on the ring is about 1.5cm.

Step 2. Wrap the ring

Wrap a piece of 22 gauge wire around the ring mandrel. Then bend one end of the wire upwards using a chain nose plier. This bend is where to start the weaving process. Then continue weaving till there is about 1.5cm left.

Step 3. Make the base for marquise gemstone

After weaving, bend the other end of the wire downward. You should get the shape as shown in picture 5.

Using a chain nose plier, create a triangle in the top of the ring using the left side wire. Then create a symmetrical triangle in the bottom of the ring using the right side wire. As a result, a diamond shape is formed. Tweak the diamond to make sure its width and length can accommodate the bead we use. 

Step 4. Add the marquise bead

Secure the top of the bead by wrapping 28 gauge wire 2-3 times against the base on both sides. Then form a cross in front of the bead and wrap the wire again at the bottom of the base (picture 9).

Now our stunning marquise citrine gemstone ring has been completed!
